How to Get Deadbeat eBay Bidders to Pay Up

How to Get Deadbeat eBay Bidders to Pay Up..

When an auction on eBay ends, the buyer enters a contract with the seller, promising to pay for the item. This doesn't always happen. Here's one creative (and questionably ethical) solution for how to handle this overly common problem.   read more here

Need to weed out a liar? Try tricking them with a choice.

Need to weed out a liar? Try tricking them with a choice. Because liars have to think so much to keep track of their lies, they'll often be unable to come up with an alternate to the options you provide. Dr. John R. Schafer, writing for Psychology Today, is back with another great tip to help you uncover a lie. He suggests that offering a liar a choice is an easy way to tell when they're full of crap:

How Much Does It Really Cost to Raise a Kid?

How Much Does It Really Cost to Raise a Kid?
Everyone knows that it’s expensive to raise a kid. Just how expensive is it to raise a child? The real price tag on raising a child from birth to 18 is pretty staggering- it may be far more than you ever expected it to be. Each child that you raise will cost more than buying three brand new, 2011 Jaguar XFs.

Apple TV vs. Google TV: How do they differ?

Apple TV vs. Google TV: How do they differ?

The smartphone brawl between Apple and Google just crashed through a fence and onto your television set. But is Apple TV vs. Google TV a fair fight? Here’s why Apple TV and Google TV are significantly different approaches to digital entertainment.

Apple TV is one box, Google TV is an ecosystem.

Google TV has more power.

Apple TV acts as a storefront.

Google TV has a Web browser.

Google TV has apps.

Google TV works with cable boxes.

Study: iPhone Users Download Average of 40 Apps, Android 25, BlackBerry 14

The last we had heard in mobile app research was a forecast that there would be 25 billion downloads by 2015, and along the same vein, Nielsen has released the results of a survey of some 4,000 mobile users about their application downloading habits. As you’d expect, iPhone users were the most active, with an average of 40 apps installed, while those with an Android phone had 25. BlackBerry trailed significantly with an average of 14 applications, and across all platforms, the average worked out to 27 applications. Those numbers are all up from December, showing that even on BlackBerry, interest in mobile apps is growing. No surprise there.

No Android PlayStation Phone This Year

A PlayStation phone? Don't hold your breath--not this year, at least. Last month we heard rumors that Sony Ericcson was working on an Android-based handset called the PlayView, which was said to be a Samsung Captivate-esque phone crossbred with a Sony PSPGo. The device was said to be do out by October.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, it is. At least the October part. In an interview withThe Seattle Times that touched on the PS3 and the battle between the Sony Move and Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect, Sony SVP Peter Dille told a reporter,
"No new mobile launches this year."
There are no follow-ups beyond that. The interview, which was held on the occasion of the PlayStation's 15th birthday, seems pretty heavily edited--if there were follow-ups, I'm guessing that Dille issued a big fat no comment on the matter.

Call Your Facebook Friends for Free From Your Android or iOS Device

Call Your Facebook Friends for Free From Your Android or iOS Device

VoIP giant Vonage has just introduced a new iPhone, iPod touch and Android app that allows users to call their Facebook friends for free. Vonage Mobile for Facebook [iTunes link] is similar to VOiP apps like Skype or Fring, but with a twist: It’s all about Facebook.

The free app does not require a Vonage subscription, but does require both parties to have the Vonage Mobile for Facebook app installed. Once installed, calls can be made over 3G or Wi-Fi.

The app is pretty simple to set up and only requires that you enter in your Facebook (Facebook) credentials once. Friends are displayed in different groups; those that can be called with the app have a “V” logo next to their names. If a friend is online but doesn’t have the app installed, you can chat with him or her and also send an invite to download the app.

Like the most recent Skype Mobile release, the app can run in the background, meaning that even if it’s not open, incoming calls can still come through. When an incoming call comes through the app, the caller’s Facebook photo and most recent status update are displayed on the screen.

This video shows how the app works:

With all the mobile OS companies touting their app stores these days, it's hard to really test drive an operating system without testing its selection of apps. Our friends at the How-To Geek, however, have figured out how to get the Android Market working in the Android emulator, so you can try out more than just the ones that come with the phone.

How to Hack Your Nintendo DS for Easy Backups and Single-Cartridge Playback

How to Hack Your Nintendo DS for Easy Backups and Single-Cartridge Playback

Earlier this year we showed you how to back up and play your Wii games from an external hard drive. Many of you wrote in asking when we would do a guide for your other gaming darling, the Nintendo DS. You asked, we listened, and now we're back with a start to finish guide to backing up your Nintendo DS games. We'll be swapping out the bulky external hard drive for a nice slender micro SD card but the basic premise remains the same.

So what do you need to get started with this backup magic? For this guide you will need the following items:

A Nintendo DS or DS Lite unit with power cable on hand.
A Flash cartridge (which we'll refer to as a flash cart from here on) such as the AceKard2i or the SuperCard DSTwo. The Acekard2i is $23.95; the Supercard DSTwo is $38.95.
A micro SD card and card reader. 2GB+ is more than sufficient for most people.
A wireless router.
Nintendo DS game cartridges to back up.
A computer—we'll be using a Windows PC for this tutorial.

Violent Offenders Had Sex With Dates At Youth Prison Party

Violent Offenders Had Sex With Dates At Youth Prison Party

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York State Commission of Correction says top officials and staff were irresponsible when they authorized and failed to supervise a party at a youth prison where some violent offenders had sex with dates.

The commission faults the Office of Children and Family Services for directing the Goshen Secure Center in the Hudson Valley to hold the December party for four offenders as a reward for good behavior. They ranged in age from 17 to 20, three doing time for murder and one for armed robbery.

The commission says officials knew little about the four female guests, ranging from 16 to 27, who were driven from Albany and New York City by state workers in state vehicles.

OCFS says it has stopped social events and disciplined seven of its staff.

File sharers targeted with legal action over music downloads

File sharers targeted with legal action over music downloads

Lawyers for Ministry of Sound and other music labels are seeking compensation, threatening court action unless file sharers pay

Some recipients of the letters, concerned about forking out huge damages, have paid up. Others have been mystified – they claim never to have downloaded the tracks. Meanwhile, some legal specialists say the threats are largely unenforceable. Unless a user confesses to illegally downloading a file, or a court order is obtained to seize a computer and the file is then located on its hard drive, consumer groups say, it's hard to see how such an action will succeed.

Even the body that represents the UK recorded music industry, the BPI, which is keen to stamp out illegal filesharing, says it does not condone the mass-mailing of alleged internet pirates. "Our view is that legal action is best reserved for the most persistent or serious offenders, rather than widely used as a first response," it says.

Windows 8 Should Virtualize Everything

The next Microsoft Windows operating system should put everything—and I mean everything—in a sandbox.

There was a time when I disagreed with the idea that the core of Microsoft's next major operating system, Windows 8, would be a hypervisor, or virtualized machine monitor. Now, however, I see the beauty of this approach, especially for consumers.

An operating system that runs everything as a virtualized machine could be one of the most significant and beneficial steps Microsoft has ever taken in the continuing development of the Windows platform. Plus, there is evidence, going all the way back to the early days of Windows 7, that this is the exact direction Microsoft has been going in all along.

When I met with Windows executives at the Microsoft Prof

The iPhone 4's insides are no secret anymore. The folks at iFixit alone have done a stellar job of documenting its every bit and bob. Still, the video above is worth watching. Created by repair firm Techrestore and composed of over 1,700 still photos, it's a highly entertaining stop-motion disassembly of Apple's latest gadget.

The sound effects are a bit cheesy, but we're willing to let that go since the rest of show is so good. For more on the iPhone 4, check out our full coverage. If you're interested in the device's internal workings, check out this unofficial repair guide put together by iFixit.

9-Yr Old Basketball Phenom, Dakota Simms

9-Yr Old Basketball Phenom, Dakota Simms

Thanks to a Hoop Docs reader, ‘Jonas’, we have been amazed all weekend by this video footage of a 9-Yr old basketball phenom named Dakota Simms. This kid has tremendous focus, determination, and passion for the sport. Watching the footage you will probably think to yourself, “Damn this kid has more game than some high school ballers I know!”

The Hoop Docs got love for any young baller that puts this kind of energy into improving his game. Dakota shoots over 300 shots per day, and often makes 30-50 threes in only a few minutes! Look out Lebron, in a few years you may be ‘passing the torch’ to a young Dakota Simms….

She once again carried the torch

LONDON — Why does Serena Williams remind me of the Statue of Liberty? Well, both are famous Americans, recognizable heroines just about everywhere.

They stand out in their occupations, symbols of the fact that anything is possible in the USA. Lady Liberty is a one-woman welcoming committee in New York. Sister Serena travels the world as the best female tennis player in creation.

Of course, they have different ideas about fashion, the Lady in a somber robe, while Serena is somewhat more daring in her raiment, on and off the job.

Did I say somewhat? Do you think Liberty would be comfortable in the fire-engine-red drawers that accompany Serena’s pristine white ensemble? Or the silver fingernails speckled with tiny sparklers and seeming like claws?

Did Apple’s iPhone 4 Just Kill the Flip?

Apple CEO Steve Jobs just announced the highly anticipated fourth-generation iPhone at WWDC, and the device is bound to make some people at Cisco pretty nervous: The iPhone 4 features 720p HD video recording at 30fps, an LED flash that doubles as a spotlight source for video recording and the ability to edit any video footage right on the device.

What The Knicks Just Told LeBron: Come To New York And Make $1 Billion

The Knicks just finished pitching LeBron James. Their main selling point: You could make a billion dollars playing in New York. You can't earn anything close to that anywhere else.

To make the case, they commissioned a study from marketing consultant Interbrand (See the powerpoint below--hit "full screen" to view.) that says LeBron could earn close to $1 billion over his lifetime in salary and endorsements if he makes Madison Square Garden his permanent home--their high-end estimate sees him earning as much as $2 billion. That outshines the estimated $700 million he’d likely earn in Cleveland, the $690 million in Chicago, and $600 million in Miami.

heaven mail

Perhaps writing your own thoughts in a personal "letter to heaven" will offer you a sense of closure or release by providing a non-threatening way to say what you were unable to say or didn't have the opportunity to say while a loved one was still with you.

This site has many options, and we hope you will take a look at all of them.

The option of writing a letter is intended to help make the expression of feelings easier. You can choose to express your thoughts freely and keep them privately close to your own heart, or share your words with family, friends or other visitors to this site.

This means that you can create and send a letter without sharing your thoughts with another person, or create a letter and post it to share with others. Sometimes just knowing that we are not alone in our feelings, and sharing such feelings with others can help speed both our own healing and that of others.

Our Letters to Heaven

Our Letters to Heaven seeks to assist others in finding peace, tranquility and healing after the loss of a loved one.

Many find that they have left things unsaid and they wished they had communicated further while their loved one was still with us.

I, the founder of this site, have found that healing through a blog that I published on-line. (Much of the content of that blog has been reproduced on these web pages.) However not everyone is well versed in the creation of websites and Our Letters to Heaven provides that outlet without having to learn html or programming, or may not want to go through the expense of registering a domain name, building and hosting a site like this one.

How to Turn an iPhone Into a Wireless iPad Camera

How to Turn an iPhone Into a Wireless iPad Camera

The iPad doesn't have a built-in camera, but you can give it something better. By putting an app onto each an iPad and an iPhone, you can connect the two via bluetooth and have a wireless camera for your iPad.

All you need to do is download the Camera A and Camera B apps onto your iPad and iPhone respectively—note that Camera A will set you back a buck while Camera B is free. Once you've got the apps on your devices, make sure bluetooth is switched on, and open the apps. Ta da! You'll see everything your iPhone's lens sees on your iPad.

To take a picture you'll tap the camera icon at the bottom of your iPad's screen. A pop up prompt will ask you if you really want to save the photo and that's it, you're done. Oh, and if you want photos to save to both your iPhone and your iPad each time, then you can flip the little toggle switch in the lower right of the screen:

Neofonie WePad Is An 11.6", Android-Based iPad Killer

Neofonie WePad Is An 11.6", Android-Based iPad Killer
Sunday, March 21, 2010 - by Ray Willington
It's a tablet-eat-tablet world out there, and with Apple's iPad starting a trend that isn't likely to die throughout 2010, you can imagine that all sorts of lesser-known contenders will be popping up with tablets and slates of their own in order to strike while the iron is hot. Today, Neofonie is introducing the WePad, a German-made unit that promises "fast Internet connectivity, a complete world of ready-to-use applications and easy access to books and photos, as well as magazines and newspapers from various publishers via the WeMagazine ePublishing Eco System."

At its heart, this is a fairly robust machine with an 11.6" display (1366x768), a rather quick 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, a webcam (for video chats, we imagine), two USB sockets, a flash card reader, integrated WWAN modem, GMA3150 graphics (far better than on most e-readers) and a battery that is said to last six hours, though that claim doesn't come with a pre-qualification of under what sort of workloads you could expect that sort of performance.

The company makes no bones about the product they are targeting, saying that their tablet is far larger and more capable than the iPad. There's also a set of built-in speakers here, and since it's based around Google's open Android operating system, applications can be loaded on to it after purchase. Other specs include 16GB of NAND Flash (32GB optional), a 1.3MP webcam, SIM card slot, Flash/Adobe AIR support, access to the WePad AppStore and Google's own Android Marketplace, multi-tasking support, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi, optional GPS, an ambient light & motion sensor and an internal microfan to keep things cool.

On paper, this certainly looks like a legitimate iPad contender. Android is a robust OS, and this expansive display will allow a lot more action to be shown on-screen. Unfortunately, there's no solid mention of a price or release date, so it's still stuck in vaporware status for now. We're guessing it'll be out in a few months, but who knows how many people will hold off from Apple's offering for that long. Let the games begin...

Drunk Drivers Evade the Cops With Twitter

Twitter has become the ultimate turncoat lately, functioning as a soldier for the police and drunken drivers alike.

We reported last week that inebriated drivers in Texas are to be outed on Twitter, and now cops report that the culprits themselves are using the microblogging site to inform others of the location of sobriety checkpoints.

A New Apple Tablet Computer Could Overwhelm Data Networks
